Lancaster Evening Post - Story shorts - 28/12/06

Two pets were killed by fumes after a candle caused a fire at a Leyland home.
A parrot and a cockatiel died when Christmas cards and wrapping paper were set alight by the candles.
The owners of the house, on Broadfield Drive, returned at 11.30am yesterday to find thick, black smoke billowing out of their living room.
The fire damaged a table and a ventilation unit was used to clear the smoke.

WALKERSTON police are ƒ¢appealingƒ¡ to the public to help solve the mystery of a bird-napping from O¡¦Shea¡¦s Hotel.

Robbo the cockatiel was taken from the front of the manager¡¦s residential unit between 8.05pm and 8.25pm on Tuesday (Boxing Day).

The well-known bird was popular with those who frequented the pub and the owners, who had him for about five months, are ¡§gutted¡¨ by the loss.

¡§I don¡¦t know if we¡¦ll ever see him again, but we just hope someone might have seen something that might help us find him,¡¨ Robbo¡¦s owner Gary Thomas said.

Robbo is distinctive because he is white and grey without any of the yellow or red colouring associated with cockatiels.

The black cage he was kept in was also taken. Robbo is easily identifiable by several tricks his owners taught him.

He knows his own name and ƒ¢oftenƒ¡ says ¡§hello Robbo¡¨ or ¡§good boy Robbo¡¨.

He loves to imitate phones ringing (he usually does four rings before squawking his own answer ¡§hello¡¨) and can whistle the first two lines of the Mexican Hat Dance. ¡§He sings the Melbourne Football Club¡¦s theme song, It¡¦s a grand old flag, too,¡¨ Mr Thomas said.

¡§For anyone who doesn¡¦t follow Aussie rules that won¡¦t mean much, but we¡¦re mad Melbourne footy club fans so we taught it to him.¡¨

Acting Senior Constable Carl Cutler said police were seeking information on any activity or unknown persons in Bold, Dutton or Fadden streets that may lead to the recovery of the bird. Information can be reported to Walkerston police on 4959 2209 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Profiling the Bird Owner

According to the AVMA, in 78.2% of bird owning households females are the primary person responsible for care of the bird. One interesting piece of data is that while 58.7% of bird-households own only one bird, 12.6% of bird-households own four or more bird.

“Families or individuals who lived in mobile homes were more likely to own birds than those who lived in other types of dwellings. In 2001, 6.5% of those living in mobile homes, compared with 4.7% of those living in houses, owned birds. Also, 3.8% of apartment dwellers and 2.4% of condominium dwellers owned birds in 2001″ (AVMA, 2002, p. 62)

In the most recent survey by AVMA (2001 data), it was found that household income levels were not a big determining factor in the ownership of birds. In other words, 4.2% of households with income over $85,000 owned birds and 5.1% of households with income less than $20,000 owned birds.
