He’s a very sweet hand raised bird and I handle him every day to keep him that way. He talks his head off.
It should be very easy to catch him.

Family’s pet parrot survives encounter with hawk

By ANNE GEGGIS

ORMOND BEACH — African grey parrot Bogart can talk, but he hasn’t yet said
a word about an incident most of his kind never live to contemplate.

What happened between the time a hawk ripped him from a screened-in porch
and when his human — the one he calls “Mom” — Elise Ewaniuk found him lying
under a tree in the thick woods probably went beyond words.

On Bogart’s seventh visit to the veterinarian in a row Wednesday, the
prognosis for survival was good — even if he might always carry the scars. His
veterinarian, Dr. Mark Andersen, isn’t sure whether Bogart’s neck will ever
straighten.

And Ewaniuk hasn’t quite recovered herself.

“Four days have been like four months,” she said.

It all started in the early afternoon Aug. 2 when Bogart was sitting on a
perch on the Ewaniuk family’s screened pool deck of their home in north Ormond
Beach
. Then, Ewaniuk heard screaming — but she didn’t know it was her
beloved “little man.”

“It sounded like something scared, something being attacked,” Ewaniuk said
of what brought her from her home office to investigate. “I came walking out
because we have a bunch of baby (wild) turkeys back there.”

What she saw, though, was beyond her imagination — and something she still
sees when she closes her eyes: her pet in the talons of a hawk.

“He was just heading from the screen into the sky,” Ewaniuk said. “I
thought, ‘He’s gone. He’s got him.’ ”

The hawk, it appears, had been able to burst through a small tear about the
size of a softball in the screen and grabbed the bird known among the Ewaniuk
family’s friends for asking, “You talking to me?”

Ewaniuk said she ran back in the house for her shoes, ready to run into the
forest behind her house.

“I guess I was going in there to see if I could find him eating him,” she
said.

She ran 20 feet and saw her feathered child lying under a tree.

“I couldn’t believe it. I don’t even know what made me run in that
direction,” she said, explaining that she had seen the bird fly in the opposite
direction.

Bogart was rushed to Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic in Port Orange. There, he
received oxygen, antibiotics and painkillers. He spent a few nights in an
incubator.

“He certainly is lucky,” said veterinarian Andersen. “Most attacks like that
. . . I’ve seen birds with the wings torn off, their legs torn off.

“The bird (hawk) was probably startled by screaming and yelling,” Andersen
said.

He advised people not to leave their exotic birds on a porch or outside
unattended.

“If they see a bird in a cage, they will reach right into the cage,”
Andersen said.

For now, when Bogart’s not resting on her chest, Ewaniuk keeps the feathered
patient in a makeshift structure formed of blankets and pillows on the sofa.
She can’t wait until he’s back to his old tricks: chasing people out of the
kitchen while laughing, attacking her husband even as he mimics Bogart’s
voice and insisting that Ewaniuk take a shower.

Tuesday she knew he was back on the road to recovery when he took the first
sip of his favorite liquid treat: hot coffee with cream and sugar. Hope that
he would be back to his old self blossomed moments after Ewaniuk brought
Bogart home.

“I put him down and he said, “C’mere.”

Letter to Pass Around on Bird Theft Ring August 3, 2007

Hi to all,

Two birds were stolen in Spokane, WA from two local bird stores- The Bird Shop and Bird Lovers Outlet. A recently weaned Goffins Cockatoo was stolen from one and a yellow collared macaw that was not weaned, from another. The same woman stole these birds from both stores. This woman is named Brandy and resides at 1908 W. Garland, Spokane WA. Her home phone number is (509) 891-4000. Her physical description is a Caucasian woman in her mid 30’s. She is between 5′2″ and 5′5″ and weighs around 250 lbs. She rarely works alone and was seen in one store with a Hispanic male and in the other store with an African American woman. The womans children are of mixed race varying from Caucasian to African American backgrounds. The children have been seen both with the woman and alone, enterring stores before or after their mother when not with her. Another woman named in this is named Cathy Trombinas(sp?). I do not have any other information on her. This woman returned to one of the stores and made direct inquiries as to the whereabouts of one bird claiming she had been interested in purchasing it. She asked to be placed on a list to be called when new babies came in.

A relative of Brandy’s turned her in to one of the store owners after having seen a reward posted on Craigslist. Another store also disclosed that the woman was in one of their national chain stores trying to “return” stolen bird supplies for money.

Upon arrival at this womans house, she was found trying to secret the baby Goffins from her home. It was taken by force by one of the store owners and demands were made for the other bird. The police had been called already but had not arrived.

This woman adamantly claimed the bird was hers and that she had purchased it. She then changed her story and made comment that the macaw had already been sold. She claimed she sold it in a Walmart parking lot. She also claimed to have sold an Amazon to a rescue in Post Falls to a man named Mitch. No such rescue is known to exist there, but a man named Mitch from Post Falls has frequented local stores. It is not known if he is a part of all this or not.

The woman did let one of the store owners enter her home after the Goffin had been recovered. The only cage in the house was a small parakeet sized cage. It is assumed the Goffin was kept in this.

When the police arrived, she changed her story numerous times finally admitting that she knew where the other bird was but refused to have it produced. The bird store owners both promised to not press charges if it were returned. She finally relented to have the bird brought back. She asked that the news crew present (Khq Q-6 tv) be told to leave, but luckily that was not a demand willing to be met.

Further discussion with the officers disclosed that the woman was part of a very large bird theft ring that stole birds state and areawide and sold them statewide. They would enter stores and put birds in their clothes or in a purse and walk out. The woman admitted to being a part of this ring that stole birds from Evergreen Pet Store, Petco, Petsmart and stores located all over outside of Spokane.

Help put an end to this Bird Theft Ring. Pass on this information or add more information you may know. Be aware that these people have no scruples and indications were made that birds may have been traded to settle debts that may or may not be drug related as well. These people may have even stolen birds from private parties. They must be stopped. If you have any other information, have been a victim, or know of someone who has, please contact your local authorities or feel free to let me know. Any and all help is appreciated.

Both birds recovered were dehydrated, hungry and weak, but otherwise ok. They both will have to be quarantined as it is unknown what other birds or situations they were subjected to.

Thank you and God Bless,

Tracy

Off Topic - Good News for Farmers and Everyone Who Eats

For those interested in farmer’s rights.

From PUBPAT:

http://www.pubpat.org/monsantorejections.htm

“The Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has rejected four key Monsanto patents related to genetically modified crops that PUBPAT challenged last year because the agricultural giant is using them to harass, intimidate, sue - and in some cases literally bankrupt - American farmers. In its Office Actions rejecting each of the patents, the USPTO held that evidence submitted by PUBPAT, in addition to other prior art located by the Patent Office’s Examiners, showed that Monsanto was not entitled to any of the patents.”
