[Video] Judge Judy’s Statement About Birds September 20, 2007
Posted by Andrew in : News, Video , trackbackHere is the clip from Judge Judy that the avian community is so upset about.
This statement shows complete ignorance about birds, and should have never been said, to anyone, nevermind on public television! She even tries to compare a bird to a dog!

Judge Judy,
I have watched your program for years and was so disappointed to hear comments about birds. You have no idea what kind of pets they are. I wouldn’t trade them for a dog or cat for any money. Just because you may not like them doesn’t mean that millions of people don’t get enjoyment from them.
Please learn more about the species before making such ridiculous statements.
Judge Judy:
My two Amazon parrots are cute, sweet, cuddly, give me little nibble kisses, talk, sing, whistle, sing nursery rhymes and country songs. I take them to the beach, to out door cafes, to art shows and fairs and for walks. They are very clean, have no odor, love their misting showers on the screened lanai, eat organic fruits and vegetables, nuts, organic parrot pellets by Dr Greg Harrison, nationally noted Avian Acredidted Veterinarian who does research and writes clinical books about avians. These birds are by pets, loved by me and all who meet them. They will go to anyone they meet and love to make new friends, sit on their arms, chatter and sing to their new friends. My birds are charming, winsome, entertaining, lovable and very much loved by me and all who know and meet them.
You need to retract your statements about birds made from lack of knowledge about them. We who have birds took exception to your harsh words about birds. All birds can and will bond to humans, and they bond for life and are monogamous to their human OR their chosen bird. Geese are monogamous and when one of a pair is shot, the bird left behind is without a mate in a world of mated, bonded pairs in their gaggle. It is very sad for monogamous birds to lose their mate and many mourn themselves to death after their mate dies.
If you want to know about birds, I’d be happy to tell you more and answer any questions you have about these sweet and adorable creatures made by God and loaned to us.
Sincerely,
Sandra Stewart
Judge Judy I am in the UK and watch all your shows. I am surprised and upset at your views on pet birds.Of course they eat and poop, so do all Gods creatures from the highest to the lowest, Pet birds can be trained to do many things and are wonderful companions. On the whole they are more intelligent than a dog and yes I have 5 dogs so am not a dog hater.I remember seeing one of your shows about a woman who’s Cockatoo, Misty Blue had died from a bad nail clip. You seemed to have every sympathy with the owner BUT told her she should have learned more about her bird before taking it to a dog beautician to have its nails cut. Perhaps also YOU should have learned more about a bird as a pet before bursting forth with that tirade about birds.
She doesn’t care if a few of you don’t watch. Or write a cute story.
She DOES care if you have connections with her co. or affiliates.
Does anyone really think she reads this Bird a Day Blog. Get real.
Go after the money. Anyone in advertising out there that is connected with her show that loves birds????

Judge Judy ,
I watch your show all the time and almost always agree with you. However, your attitude about birds is outrageous. My household includes 7 humans, 1 dog, several cats (they adopted us us and live under the house) and 7 birds. My birds take great delight in “dive bombing” us and laughing, riding with me to the local fastfood place for his chocolate milkshake, and taking showers with anyone willing to let them sit on their shoulder. These birds are as much a member of our family as the kids or dogs.
The woman who had 60 birds in her house had every right to make sure her babies went to a good home. If the situation was reversed and you had to rehome your dogs you wouldn’t want them going to just anybody. You would make sure they went to a loving family that would appreciate them.
By the way, bird poop is a lot easier to clean up than dog poop.
Mary Lind,
I dont think anyone thinks she reads my blog either. Many people are sending comments to JJ via her website and posting what they sent here, or on forums, email groups, etc so others can see their opinion and perhaps think about it also.
You are correct that hitting her company/affiliates/sponsors/etc however they do it, speak louder than words though.
Alot of people read Bird A Day Blog regularly and seeing the feedback from people who are in agreement on this will help those who are on the fence on issues to make their desision.
Thank you everyone for your comments, they are very important. I am glad to see them.
This so called JUDGE needs to control her mouth concerning all animals not just birds.
How a so called Judge can make such irresponsable remarks is beyond me.
But then it is well known that folks with power tend to abuse the power ever chance they get, someone should hold this person in contempt and place her on the other side of the fence.
Apparently this worthless JUDGE isn’t aware of how many animal lovers there are and since she depends on viewers for ratings her big mouth could place her show on the rocks…
Pudge Judy…here’s a bar of soap for your fowl mouth….open wide…
Hi everyone, I am a fellow-birdlover, and, like you, took great exception to Judge Judy’s remarks about our feathered kids (fids). Even the direct comments on you tube were very damning of the lady with the birds!!!
This is the comment I posted direct on YouTube to all the self-righteous so-and-so’s that sided with Judy…
How many of you self-righteous pricks actually OWN birds??!
I have over 60 parrots, plus 13chicks, and over 39eggs (though I do keep them OUTside)… are you going to condemn ME now???
Though I agree that 60 birds are a few too many to keep under a suburban roof (though it’d be MUCH worse if they were free flying in the house), at the same time, many petshops I’ve seen are smaller than some loungerooms I’ve been in…which is worse? Who are we to judge when we have NO idea how big her home is, or WHERE in the house the birds were kept….for all we know she could have had a seperate, childproof, ball-room sized ‘bird room’ for them!!!?
The only time I have been DISGUSTED by people keeping birds inside is when they’ve had over a dozen FLYING FREE, pooping everywhere, with full range of the entire house….VERY unsanitary, I agree…. or in tiny, poorly maintained cages, taking up half (or more) of the available space in the home… I very much doubt this would be the case in this instance, though I concede I could be wrong…
Also, look at things in context, birds come in many different sizes - 50 finches probably need as much space as a couple of macaws…. that’s half the birds in one hit! So she may not have needed as much space as you ASSUME… (Don’t forget, to “ASSUME” makes an “ASS” out of “U” and “ME”.)
I found JJ’s comments to be exceptionally biased… birds offer a lot more than “eat and eliminate”… they are wonderful, intelligent, often very affectionate, companion pets, that can be better (and CLEANER) than many of the more popular pets (and some PEOPLE I know) IF CARED FOR PROPERLY!!!!
…and from a money point of view, that’s THOUSANDS of dollars worth (even if there were only a couple of macaws in the melee) of birds she would have been FORCED to just “GIVE AWAY”…..would you do the same?????
birds suck. they poop on everyone’s car from the air and don’t think twice about it. You think they throw a big fuss like you all are about feeling bad about what they did. No! So JJ said birds are nasty little creatures. Big deal. I am sure birds everywhere aren’t in tears over this comment. Birds could care less about you all. I’m sure a multi-millionaire like Judge Judy would sit down and read a bunch of dumb complaints from bird lovers rather than doing one hundred other more important things.
Judge Judy: you sit on your throne as pompas as ever, You may be smart and intelligent but you know nothing about birds. Or bird people. I sometimes prefer my bird over humans. Birds did not cause
the problems in this world, humans did. We as humans have raped and plundered this planet. We pollute, destroy, and have total disregard for this planet and all of its inhabitants. We are racist, selfserving, pompas, destroyers with no concience. We wage war on our brethren, because they disagree with us.We are very poor custodians of this planet called earth. The green house effect was brought by man not birds. You need a wake up call.
I have 3 Exotic birds as pets and each has their own personality.
